The FoSGP group are planning to continue weeding and tidying the park on 2nd November Saturday morning from 10am to around midday(ish). Why not join us and help keep the park looking good? Following requests by FoSGP in 2012 the District Council stopped using broad-spectrum systemic herbicides to kill weeds in the park. This means we have to weed it ourselves which is a rewarding experience, outdoors with fellow park friends improving this little oasis of town centre green space and raising its profile as an asset of community value. You are welcome to enjoy this community activity with us in your favourite town centre park:- St George's -The 'People's Park' Since 1927! Any help you can offer is always very welcome The Friends group are pleased to announce that we have been given this year's Wyre Forest Community Event of the Year Award for our St George's Family Fun Day last April. This is the first year that these awards have been made. Ten awards were handed out at the event on 9th October, organised by Wyre Forest District Council and Vestia Community Trust in partnership with The Shuttle, at Wyre Forest House. The event for which we won the title was the fourth St George's Day family day in the park where all of the attractions and activities are free of charge and paid for through fundraising by the Friends group. We are looking forward now to an even bigger and better St George's Day event in 2014. The fun days always take place on the Saturday nearest to St George's Day. Next year that will be on 26 April so watch out for more details here on the website and also on Facebook and Twitter as St George's Day 2014 begins to take shape. Better still, why not get involved in organising the follow-up to our award winning event and be part of FoSGP taking our park in new directions and to future successes in our community? St George's -The People's Park Work Party A work party of seven Friends of St George's Park worked today to clear the weeds from the stone circles, some of the steps and the path by the play area. Although it was overcast this morning the rain held off so we were able to get quite a lot done. In order to stay on top of the weeding and tidy up other areas of the park we will be having the next work party on Saturday 2nd November. It would be really great if as many people as possible could help us to do the jobs that need to be done to keep the park looking good. Its an opportunity for people to get some light exercise in the open air, to socialise and to undertake whatever level of activity suits them. The park was given to the people of Kidderminster and now the people of Kidderminster are increasingly involved in looking after this valuable green space in the heart of the town. Help us make the best of our park and get involved. Next park work party is on Saturday 2nd November Starting at 10 am - ALL WELCOME! CALLING ALL FRIENDS of the park OLD AND NEW! Work Party Needed on Saturday Morning 12th October.7/10/2013 Volunteers are needed this Saturday to do some work tidying up the park. If you can give some time on Saturday morning from 10 am on to help with weeding it would be really great to see you. Undertaking this work was agreed when the Friends group asked Wyre Forest District Council to stop using herbicides in the park for environmental reasons. With the arrival of fruit trees and other 'edible' fruits like the chutney hedge, the Friends thought it best to stop spraying weedkiller in the park. The weeds do need to be kept under control though and while the District Council Parks Department continues to maintain the park, the Friends group are now responsible for the weeding. If you would like to join us to help out with this we will be in the park after 10am on Saturday. We hope you can make it! |
