St George's Park shelter at 10 am to decide work party priorities.
All volunteers Welcome!
Some Light Refreshments Provided.
A work party is needed for St George's Park tomorrow morning, we will be meeting at the shelter at 10am whatever the weather to discuss planting fruit trees and the new raised beds. LEAP is becoming widely known in the area, it is about making the park feed the body and not just the soul of the community as a well loved green space. This is a philosophy not disimilar to that of St George's coffee shop at the church on Friday mornings and it was while visiting there today I was prompted to capture this image of LEAP - now beyond the park gates in the neighbourhood. Anyway ....please come if you can to help us move the Let's Eat the Park project forward and plant some more edibles in the parks and in the areas surrounding them.

Let's Eat the Park took another LEAP in the park today when the second pair of raised beds were established. Ongoing work to create wheelchair accessible growing areas and picnic table is now underway in readiness for next Spring's planting. Many thanks for the guidance from Mark and Beryl at Disability Action Wyre Forest (DAWF) on access issues to this centrepiece of the LEAP project. We are also delighted that two name plates for St George's Park have been installed at the Silver Street and the St George's Ringway gates. The Friends group have campaigned for the park to get the recognition it deserves as an urban green space on the edge of Kidderminster town centre. Some people have previously told us that they had not known that our park was St George's, the only name sign we had until today was on the notice board by the Radford Avenue entrance. Friends group members are grateful to our partners Wyre Forest District Council for their support in establishing these beds as LEAP basecamp and also for delivering our name signs.
So now people know who we are and where we are please come and visit the park and enjoy a bit of greenery just across the ring road, have a look there's more to it than you may have thought. We are working to make our area a greener and more edible place where everyone feels welcome and nobody goes hungry, that's what drives Let's Eat the Park - if it appeals to you too come and join us! We're A Winner!
A huge thanks to all who voted for us in the Skipton Building Society/Grassroots Giving competition, it was confirmed today that Friends of St George's Park will receive one of the 161 grants of £500 given by Skipton Building Society to mark their years of existence since they were founded in 1853. The funding will go toward the Let's Eat the Park initiative which is really taking off in the Horsefair and surrounding areas. We are also grateful to Project Dirt for their support and of course to Skipton Building Society for their incredible generosity. It is always great to receive funding and of course all of us at FoSGP are made up about it, but for us this is something even more important than the funds, it is about recognition on a national scale. The competition was very tough, we were amongst more than 300 shortlisted groups and projects all over the UK and of those we received enough votes to be among the 161 winners. The support of those who voted for us is worth much more than money can buy, it is a recognition of our LEAP project and the other activies the Friends group organise in the community and shows we can hold our own in a highly competitive national funding arena and win the support of many friends locally and further afeild. This is especially gratifying for a group which has no professional input and is entirely community based and resident led. Our sister park at Baxter Gardens is also part of of Let's Eat the Park with interest shown by St George's church, the Co-Op Children's Centre, Kidderminster Transition group, the Prince's Trust and of course our partners Wyre Forest District Council. Let's Eat the Park has been funded with Health Lottery money from The People's Health Trust and has other funding bids currently in progress to develop the project further. We are grateful to all who have sponsored us including Worcestershire County Council who have provided, through the Changing Futures Fund, the support of Droitwich CVS and Tonia Enderbury who delivered a CFF package that will help us change our legal structure in the near future. More on that later. For now we can just enjoy our success and watch our projects grow in the knowledge that community sector activists are changing the area from the grassroots upwards. It is therefore fitting we think that we have now received grassroots funding to continue to develop this work, just as it was that the People's Park received People's Health Trust funds to kick start Let's Eat the Park in the first place. These twin themes of grassroots activity - by the (local) people and for the people - lie at the very heart of what the Friends of St George's Park are all about. If you want to be part of the action why not get involved? Its easy..... just contact us through the website, Twitter or Facebook, or by email ...or why not just turn up at one of our meetings or work parties where you can be sure of a warm welcome, give it a go, you won't regret it! In the meantime Let's Eat the Park together. While we have been busy with getting LEAP off the ground, the Friends are also starting to plan for the annual St George's Family Fun Day in April. We will be putting together another free family day with arts, crafts, storytelling, theatre, science and discovery in St George's Park on the closest Saturday to the patron saint's day on the 23rd. In 2015 that means that the event is planned for Saturday 25 April and we would welcome ideas, suggestions and help in putting together this award winning free family event.
If you can contribute to the success of the day in anyway and are interested in volunteering please contact the Friends of St George's Park either using the comments form below or by email. We are looking forward to organising another great day for local residents and visitors of all ages, all are welcome, we hope you can come along and join in with the fun and discovery on the day. We are always looking out for new things to put on so if you are interested in making a contribution please get in touch and tell us about your idea. FoSGP also have a policy banning helium balloons and chinese lanterns on health and safety as well as on environmental protection grounds so we do not allow these at any event we organise. Having said that we find ways of entertaining and delighting those who attend our free park events without squandering any scarce resources or creating other sorts of hazards in, or for, the community. Please watch our What's On Page in the coming weeks and months for more information. In the meantime please remember our Carols in the Park event in partnership with St George's church on Friday 12 December at the shelter starting at 5.30pm. Come and enjoy seasonal refreshments and carol singing to get into the spirit of the holiday season around the deep midwinter and run up to Christmas and the New Year. Again watch the What's On page for more info and updates on this and other developments in St George's Park - the People's Park - since 1927. Our meeting is at 7pm on Friday 7 November at The Co-op Child Care Centre at the corner of Coventry Street and Radford Avenue DY10 2SE
