5:00pm Wednesday 14th November 2012 By William Tomaney CHANGES to Wyre Forest’s splash parks and paddling pools have been given the go-ahead. Wyre Forest District Council’s cabinet approved the plans at a meeting on Monday which will see the current Brinton Park facility demolished with a new one built next to the site’s play area. The district council will look to build a new splash park at Stourport’s Lickhill Memorial Park and work with Stourport Town Council to transfer the provision and maintanence of the current Riverside pool. The St George’s Park, Kidderminster, splash park will be repaired using the water pump from the facility due to be demolished in Brinton Park and the Northwood Lane facility will be retained. District council leader Conservative John Campion said not only were the parks being improved but the plans would save taxpayers money. He added: “It was very sad we were not able to open the some of the splash pads this year. “One of the most important things was for us to get them open next year and without passing these plans we would not have been able to.” Proposals were put forward after £300,000 was allocated to splash parks in this year’s budget. Plans, which will be assessed tonight by the district council’s overview and scrutiny committee, include building a new splash pad at Stourport’s Lickhill Memorial Park and moving the water park in Kidderminster’s Brinton Park to the site’s play area. The proposals were put forward after £300,000 was allocated to splash parks in this year’s budget but the district’s paddling pools were also a topic of controversy during the summer. Parents and children were left disappointed when it was announced the Brinton Park facility would not be opened this year and the Stourport Riverside pad’s opening was delayed. Tonight’s meeting will hear the favoured options for splash pads include providing a new facility next to Brinton Park’s play area and demolishing the old one. Plans also include providing a splash pad at Lickhill Memorial Park and transferring ownership to Stourport Town Council. The district council will look to lease the Stourport Riverside facility to a commercial operator. If one is not found, it risks demolition. For the St George’s Park facility, the council is proposing to transfer the pump from the current Brinton Park splash pad to help repairs. The Northwood Lane park will be retained. © Copyright 2001-2012 Newsquest Media Group Link to Shuttle web page - post your comments there A couple of months ago a few members of our group had a conversation with some young people who were in the park. As usual we asked them if they had any ideas on how to make the Park a better place. They said that they liked using the BMX track and the football/basketball area however when they want to play football after using the BMX track there is nowhere to safely lock their bikes. We quickly got to work on how we could get some bike racks fitted in the park. We found a local supplier (Spokes) who offered a fantastic discount, funding was obtained through Worcestershire County Council Councillor Division funding (Cllr Fran Oborski) and Wyre Forest District Council agreed to fit them. We unveiled them at the combined 'Big Draw' and bike safety event last week where we were gave out free lights and bike locks away thanks to donations from the Wyre Forest Community Safety Partnership If you have any other ideas on how the Park could be improved please tell us! Don't forget we are meeting on Friday 2nd November, 7-8pm at the Bluebell Inn, Hurcott Road2/11/2012
