A work party of 7 volunteers and support from Deb our local CSO meant that there were eight hi-viz vests visible in the park today. The day has been a very productive one, they always are really (which is one reason they qualify as green therapy in our view) ...but today was especially productive for both planting and completing the weeding of the chutney hedge and also the perimeter railings at the Coventry Street junction with the ring road. At the same time as the gardening was taking place, new discoveries have been made that have increased the plastic menagerie we've found in the park so far. A new plastic green grasshopper is now joined by an equally plastic grey elephant and a multicoloured psychedelic fish - when these are added together with the giraffe called George - we have all the makings of becoming St George's Plastic Safari Park. We must point out however that the roadside brown tourist signs with an elephant on them you see on approaches to Kidderminster, refer to the West Midlands Safari Park and not St George's Park - the People's Park since 1927 - and a plastic menagerie since a week last Saturday. How many more toy animals are there awaiting discovery? Keep up with the latest news from FoSGP here.....

There will be a work party at 10am in St George's Park on Saturday 28 February meet at the Shelter or if you miss us there check out the chutney hedge (along the Children's Centre wall). There is plenty to be done in the parks in the coming weeks and if you can help please come along and join us. There will be refreshments as usual and a chance to get involved with the LEAP project. Come along and meet us - All Welcome!
Please Note the Seed Swap started last week at the Youth House is ongoing at St George's Church café Friday mornings and there will also be seeds to swap available at the Work Party at St George's Park! Visitors to today's seed swap came from as far away as south east London (pictured above with Spike) at the Youth House in Kidderminster town centre. For the Friends group and especially for the LEAP project this has been a very significant event. It has helped to forge still closer links with the Youth House and the Kidderminster and District Youth Trust (KDYT) who are highly valued locality partners. There is a close affinity between the Youth House and St George's Park on either side of St George's Ringway both providing free services to the local community in different, but complementary ways. The very presence of LEAP activists and visitors in the Youth House is an expression of a cohesive community sharing scarce resources, a vision that lies at the heart of the Let's Eat the Park project. We were therefore very happy indeed today to be joined by Tracey a representative of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) who has joined the Friends of St George's Park and who will be working collaboratively with us on Let's Eat the Park and related projects. As a grassroots organisation we at FoSGP are excited by the prospect of working collaboratively with the RHS and KDYT as important partners in LEAP. This is the first report of the event and the networking that took place there. A more detailed account will be put on the LEAP Blog shortly with more pictures and analysis. It is the aim of the LEAP team to facilitate a seamless network between our community sector self-help project and local, regional and national organisations. We are very pleased with the progress of these efforts to date and look forward to new integrated approaches to resident-led community development, from the grassroots up. If this interests you, contact us to find out more using the form below or by email. Watch out for the next Blog article on LEAP Networking in Greenhill/Horsefair Areas - coming soon. http://leapstgeorges.blogspot.co.uk The Let's Eat the Park team will be having a seed swap at the Kidderminster and District Youth Trust building at the Youth House - Bromsgrove Street, Kidderminster, Worcestershire DY10 1PF on Saturday 21 February from 10am-2pm. Come and pick up some free seeds/ seedlings etc, or why not bring your own to swap? Meet the LEAP team, find out about things happening in the area, enjoy some refreshments, chill out and/or get involved in the project. Admission FREE Let's Eat the Park was established to push growing edibles beyond the park gates and into the local area. We have done this previously in Baxter Avenue on the approach to Baxter Gardens Park and today the project took another LEAP forward by planting the churchyard across Radford Avenue from St George's Park. Today a LEAP team planted gooseberries, blackcurrants, sage, rosemary and lavender in one of the six south bays of St George's Church...the team also prepared another bed for planting. The Friends of St George's Park are having a Seed Swap at the Youth House in Kidderminster on 21 February 10am-2pm - come along and pick up some seeds, please bring along any spare seeds you may have, contribute to LEAP - refreshments available entry FREE. Have a look at the What's On page above for poster. How about spending a couple of hours in St George's Park at our special Valentine's Day work party where we show our love for the park by weeding it, planting stuff and generally sprucing it up? If the weather is bad we will meet in the shelter at 10am have a coffee, a few biscuits and a bit of a think about what needs to be done next. Work parties are fun, people of all abilities can take part, there's no pressure - you just go at your own pace and enjoy being outdoors wth other people looking after the People's Park. Come and catch up with the latest developments with the Let's Eat the Park project and help out with planting fruit and vegetables in the park and beyond.
Hope to see you there at the shelter - all welcome! The Friends of St George's Park are meeting at our new venue the Youth House Kidderminster at 7pm this evening thanks to partnership arrangements recently agreed with Kiddermister and District Youth Trust.
We are most grateful to our hosts for providing an excellent venue for FoSGP meetings and other joint ventures with the Youth House. For those who don't know it the Youth House is in Bromsgrove Street, Kidderminster DY10 1PF Tonight's meeting will be in the Charles Room that can be accessed through the side entrance of the Youth House in the car park on Lion Street. We have so much to discuss including the provision of new fruit trees and new developments for Let's Eat the Park reaching out into St George's churchyard in an ever growing local LEAP network. If you are interested in what we are doing come along and get involved. Other topics are going to include preparations for a seed swap and also sixth annual St George's Family Fun and Discovery Day on 25 April - FoSGP's award winning free community festival in Horsefair aimed at children and families. Things are developing rapidly for the Friends group so why not come along and check out what we're up to. All supporters are welcome. |
