Rivaling that other local Wyre Forest attraction West Midlands Safari Park, St George's Park Kidderminster is home to the incredibly rare chutney hedge giraffe whose numbers in the wild are estimated to be no more than - one.
It's strange what we sometimes find in the park. People leave behind evidence of almost every function of modern life. Today' s finds include a Blackberry mobile phone (reported to the police) a toy car and a plastic giraffe discovered hiding in the chutney hedge. Despite its camouflage the said giraffe was spotted by a sharp-eyed LEAP work party removing unwanted additions to the hedge including a viciously barbed self-seeded acacia, a rogues gallery of opportunist interlopers including buddleia and various weeds, which may only be plants in the wrong place - but ones not welcome in our chutney hedge now entering its fourth year and the oldest part of the Let's Eat the Park project. Rivaling that other local Wyre Forest attraction West Midlands Safari Park, St George's Park Kidderminster is home to the incredibly rare chutney hedge giraffe whose numbers in the wild are estimated to be no more than - one. Besides discovering rare objects the work party cleared half the chutney hedge between the nursery gates and the kissing gate on Coventry Street removing 7 barrow loads of weeds and misplaced shrubs. It was great to see the first signs of Spring in the park today including the first violets and snowdrops as well as some early growth of LEAP edibles like onions, garlic and hazelnuts. Here are a few pictures of what is appearing in the park on the last day of January 2015.

As we come to the end of January already 2015 has become an interesting year. Computer problems have prevented us from posting as much as we would have liked on the website recently and this has also affected our Twitter feed, although our Facebook presence has fortunately been largely unscathed. Last weekend the Friends group stall at the Green Homes event at Kidderminster Town Hall attracted a lot of attention and we have had good feedback from the Transition group who organised it. We were able to further promote the LEAP project which has gone from strength to strength since it began last June and which continues to develop apace as this year's planting season approaches.
We will be having another LEAP work party in St George's Park tomorrow - meeting at the shelter at 10am as usual. The work party is planned to go ahead come rain or shine (or snow/hail/sleet etc) but if the weather is too inclement to work outdoors, we will have a cup of coffee and consider the way forward for the project in the shelter. We are also in the process of changing the venue for FoSGP meetings and we will have some very good news on that to tell you about in the next few days - ahead of our meeting on Friday next week (6 February). So watch the website/Twitter/Facebook over the coming weekend for more information on this and others developments, or better still...come along to tomorrow's work party and discover more about our new move and of course all the latest on Let's Eat the Park. Hope you can make it, we look forward to seeing you- All welcome! A small but perfectly formed LEAP work party finished off reclaiming escaped soil from the park perimeter today and filled up the last remaining raised beds. It was a lovely sunny day if a bit chilly, we were so glad that it was dry enough to make an impact. We had time to plant some spring bulbs to brighten up the paths and borders in several places around the park and we all had a great time into the bargain. There will be a LEAP work party in the park today [17 January] at 10am. The usual arrangements meet at the shelter, free refreshments to all who take part- Hope you can make it!
The Friends of St George's Park in Collaboration with the Friends of Baxter Gardens Park are having a LEAP work party tomorrow Saturday 10 January in St George's Park. As usual there will be refreshments, good company and life enhancing activity at no cost to anyone. Come along, check it out for yourself, get the benefit -ENJOY!
The Friends of St George's Park are back after the winter break with renewed energy and enthusiasm for the coming year. We wish all of our friends, volunteers and supporters all the very best in 2015.
As a Horsefair/Greenhill urban green space we are closely connected to our sister park at Baxter Gardens which is at the northeastern end of the Let's Eat the Park Project area. It has been six months since the LEAP project began and a lot of groundwork has been achieved. Varieties of fruit and vegetables are ever increasing in St George's Park and now taking off in earnest at Baxter Gardens Park too. We look back on 2014 as an amazing year when we made several successful bids for funding and for other elements of help and support both locally and nationally. We are grateful to the People's Health Trust, Wyre Forest Clinical Commissioning Group, Wyre Forest District Council, the Skipton Building Society Grassroots Giving Project and other individuals and organisations who have contributed in a variety of ways to our projects over the past year including;- the Co-operative Children's Centre, the Prince's Trust, Sainsburys Ltd, Twigs, the Arts Council, St George's Church, Project Dirt, Wyre Forest Islamic Community Group, Kidderminster Educational Fund, Changing Futures Fund, Culture Shapers, Disability Action Wyre Forest and all who have given their time, energy and talents to make 2014 a memorable milestone in the history of both the Friends of St George's Park and the Friends of Baxter Gardens Park. We are already very busy planning the next full year of LEAP, the 6th annual St George's Family Fun and Discovery Day on 25 April and the 3rd KidFest - St George's Park contribution to the Kidderminster Arts Festival in August. Other than all that, we are continuing to organise work parties for volunteer community gardening party animals in both parks, plus a whole host of other activities in Horsefair on the edge of the town centre. If you want to be a part of this ever unfolding world of activity, free food, free entertainment, free discovery and free magical stuff - why not come along to our meeting and help us make 2015 even more fantastic than 2014. Give it a go - come along on Friday 9 January 2015 to the Co-Op Childcare Centre at 7pm - it's on the corner of Coventry Street and Radford Avenue DY10 2BP It would be great to see you there! http://www.thecooperativechildcare.coop/our-nurseries/kidderminster/ 2014 The Year in Pictures (but not in any particular order) |
